Executive Director Job Description 

BACKGROUND

The Basalt Education Foundation (BEF) was established in 1995 by a group of parents who wanted to raise funding for the students of Basalt public schools. The Foundation is known for its three main events that bring the local community together:  The Turkey Trot, The Taste of Basalt and Motors on Midland. These three beloved community events annually raise funds to enhance education in Basalt public schools. In 2023, we added staff to support the outdoor education and experiential program that is bringing enormous value and opportunities to all students. 

POSITION SUMMARY

The BEF Board is seeking a person with outstanding leadership skills to become its new Executive Director. This strategic, creative, and insightful Executive Director will help ensure the organization continues to thrive in accomplishing our bold mission for the future and in setting a mutually supportive and energizing organizational culture.

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategy, and operation of the organization. These responsibilities include managing the budget; leading a team of two part-time staff; playing a key role in fundraising; developing and sustaining relationships with donors and local business owners; and maintaining a strong relationship with the Board of Directors. Specific responsibilities and qualifications are summarized below and may not be all inclusive. 

This is a year-round, part-time position (estimated 20-hours/week). 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Management and Operations

  • Lead staff to put strategic thinking into action and achieve organizational goals, with regular internal and external communications.

  • Be accountable for the success and impact of all BEF programs and events including fundraising, advocacy and coalition building.

  • Set monthly meeting agendas in coordination with committee chairs and executive committee members.

  • Oversee all financial matters of the Foundation including audits, grants, monthly financial reporting and payroll.

  • Ensure financial stability and sustainability of the organization.

Board Management

  • Develop and manage a diverse, engaged nonprofit board aligned with BEF’s mission.

  • Assist the BEF Board to develop and operationalize strategic plans.

  • Recruit new active, engaged board members and ensure they have a solid understanding of the organization’s mission and programs.

  • Monitor annual board members’ financial contributions.


Relationships, Partnerships and Communications

  • Publicly convey the organization’s message with the support of the Board.

  • Act as an ambassador of the Foundation by attending community events  and nurturing relationships with impactful partners, such as the school district.

  • Act as the official spokesperson for all public relation inquiries, public outreach, messaging in  community (radio, newspaper, email, phone, or in-person).

  • Build relationships with partner organizations, supporters, businesses and other organizations.

  • Maintain relationships with existing funders and cultivate relationships with new supporters and major donors.

  • Connect the organization and staff with community partners that help advance the impact and strategic goals of the organization.

  • Maintain the online calendar and online documents – in coordination with committee chairs. 

  • Meet annually with individual board members to gauge interest in projects/committees, participation, and effectiveness of their role.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

The ideal candidate will have a background in nonprofit leadership and governance, fundraising, events and communications. We are looking for a self-motivated and well organized Executive Director that possesses a passion for the Basalt community and our local public schools.

Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.


SALARY RANGE
This position has a hiring range of $35.00 to $40.00 per hour and will be dependent on qualifications, experience and education.
