Job Description 

Background

Basalt Education Foundation (BEF) was established in 1994 by parents who wanted to raise funding for Basalt Public Schools students. BEF is known for its three community events: Turkey Trot, Taste of Basalt, and Motors on Midland.

In 2023, BEF added staff to support the outdoor and experiential education program (O/Ex Ed) that brings enormous value and opportunities to all students. 

Position Summary 

BEF seeks an Executive Director ready to lead with energy and dedication, from overseeing large-scale fundraising initiatives to supporting day-to-day activities like organizing school events. This role requires a strategic, creative, and driven leader to ensure BEF continues to succeed in fulfilling our mission of "empowering Basalt Public Schools to thrive through community investment.

The Executive Director is responsible for the organization's overall leadership, strategy, and operation. These responsibilities include fundraising, managing the budget, leading a small team, developing and sustaining relationships with donors, the RFSD Board, and local business owners, and maintaining a strong relationship with the BEF Executive Board. Specific responsibilities and qualifications are summarized below and may need to be more inclusive. 

This is a year-round, part-time position with an average of 20 hours per week, totaling up to 1,000 hours annually. The weekly hours may vary depending on events and school programming needs, with some weeks requiring more or fewer hours. 

 

Responsibilities 

Organizational Management and Operations

  • Lead the staff in implementing strategic thinking and achieving organizational goals through regular internal and external communications.

  • Participate in the execution and impact of BEF programs and events, ensuring alignment with our mission and strategic objectives.

  • Responsibilities include leading fundraising to support the organization's goals.

  • Set and prepare monthly meeting agendas in coordination with committee chairs and executive committee members.

  • Oversee all BEF financial matters in collaboration with the bookkeeper, including audits, grants, monthly financial reporting, and payroll.

  • Ensure financial stability and sustainability of the organization.

  • Support O/Ex Coordinator during peak times, including but not limited to packing coolers, organizing gear, grocery shopping, and volunteer coordination.


Board Management

  • Develop and manage a diverse, engaged nonprofit board aligned with BEF's mission.

  • Assist the BEF Board to develop and operationalize strategic plans.

  • Recruit and onboard new, active, engaged board members and ensure they understand the organization's mission and programs.

  • Track financial contributions and event involvement, ensuring they align with BEF's priorities.


Relationships, Partnerships, and Communications

  • Publicly convey the organization's message with approval from the Board.

  • Act as an ambassador of BEF by attending community events and nurturing relationships with impactful partners, such as the school district.

  • Serve as the BEF's primary spokesperson, managing public relations inquiries, press releases, and public outreach via media channels (radio, newspaper, email, phone, in-person).

  • Build relationships with partner organizations, supporters, businesses, and other organizations.

  • Maintain relationships with existing funders and cultivate relationships with new supporters and major donors.

  • Connect the organization and staff with community partners that help advance the impact and strategic goals of the organization.

  • Maintain the online calendar and online documents – in coordination with committee chairs. 

  • Meet annually with individual board members to gauge interest in their projects/committees, participation, and effectiveness in their roles.

Previous Experience and Education
The ideal candidate will have a nonprofit leadership, governance, fundraising, event planning, and communications background. Proven experience with budget management, community engagement, and strategic planning is highly desirable. A passion for supporting public education and strengthening community ties is essential. Grant writing experience is a plus.

Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Salary Range
The salary for this role ranges from $35.00 to $40.00 per hour, based on qualifications, experience, and education. This is a part-time, year-round position with an estimated average of 20 hours per week, totaling up to 1,000 hours annually. Weekly hours may fluctuate based on event schedules and program needs, with flexibility in scheduling. Benefits are not included.
